CASE NO. 02

Coaching New Supervisors to Build Leadership Confidence & Authority

THE PROBLEM

A client promoted two high-performing individual contributors to supervisory roles. While they were technically excellent, they struggled with the transition to leadership. They were overwhelmed by conflict, inconsistent in their decision-making, and were being bypassed by their former peers who still viewed them as 'one of the team' rather than authority figures. Performance was slipping because clear directions weren't being followed, and morale was dipping as the team lacked firm leadership.

WHAT I DID

I implemented a 12-week leadership transition program specifically for these supervisors. This included one-on-one coaching focused on 'difficult conversations' and setting boundaries. We conducted group training sessions on performance management, delegation, and the legal aspects of supervision. I also mentored them through real-time team issues, helping them script their responses and establish new patterns of accountability that reinforced their authority without damaging relationships.

THE OUTCOME

Within three months, the supervisors were leading with visible confidence. Peer-level bypassing stopped as the supervisors learned to hold firm on directives. Team performance metrics stabilized and then improved by 15% as consistency returned to the floor. The supervisors stayed with the company, reporting higher job satisfaction and lower stress, effectively securing the company's internal talent pipeline and reducing the risk of management-driven turnover.
